DEEPER Questions

Go through these questions in your LifeGroup or on your own to Dig Deeper into
Sunday's message

1. Rodney started the sermon by debunking some common myths we believe about Christmas. What are some beliefs you have about Christmas? How did you find out if they were true or not?

2. The story of Jesus's birth in the book of Matthew introduces us to Mary's husband-to-be, Joseph. Joesph doesn't get a ton of air time in the Bible, but he's a super important figure and role-model. What did you learn about Joseph in this Scripture? Why do you think we (especially the men) should look up to Joseph?

3. Why do you think the Jewish people were so surprised by the way Jesus's birth played out when they had been waiting for a savior for thousands of years? What was different about Jesus  the savior they were anticipating?

4. Rodney shared this quote: "Character has nothing to do with what someone else has done and everything to do with how God has called you to live." What does that statement mean to you? How does this shift your view of character as it relates to your own life?

5. Why do you think Jesus came to save us from our sins and not from something else like an invading army, disease, or persecuting ruler? Do you think sin is really the biggest problem facing us? Why or why not? Why do you think Jesus chose to save his people (everyone) from this one specific thing?

DIG INTO Scripture

Read and meditate on Sunday's Scripture to find deeper meaning and connection to God

Matthew 1:18-25

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ[a] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed[b] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

LEAVE THE BUILDING

Take what you learned on Sunday and apply it to your life

  • Jesus comes not just to fix our mess, but to enter into the mess with us. What does this truth mean to you? How can you invite Jesus into your mess, not just to fix it, this week?
  • Jesus gives us what we need, not necessarily what we want. How has Jesus given you what you need, even if it hasn't always been what you wanted?
  • What are some practical things you can do for the rest of this week to prepare your heart and mind for the birth of our Savior?
