DEEPER Questions

Go through these questions in your LifeGroup or on your own to Dig Deeper into
Sunday's message

1. Rodney started off the message by talking about how he's always paranoid he's going to forget an invitation to something big like a wedding. Have you ever been invited to something and then lost the invitation? What was that experience like?

2. Jesus's invitation that he extends to all of us is to come and die. It's an invitation that doesn't sound like the most fun, and also one that keeps getting lost in the mail for most churches. Why do you think we as individuals and as the modern-day church are so hesitant to accept this invitation? What invitations do you think we're accepting in its place?

3. The only way we truly come to know Jesus and be one with him is through dying to self. Why do you think this concept of denying self to follow a risen Savior is so challenging for this generation? Why do you think we so often believe self is the solution when it's actually the problem?

4. What are some ways you've chosen yourself over Jesus in your own life? How have those choices turned out for you? What kind of things were you placing your identity in other than Jesus? Share with the group if you're comfortable.

5. What do you think the takeaway "you have to lose to win" means in the context of this message? What are some things we have to give up as individuals in order to follow Jesus?

6. Rodney shared that we're often ashamed when it comes to Jesus or sharing our faith. But Jesus says that if we were ashamed of him on Earth, he'll be ashamed of us when it comes time for us to meet him face to face. Have you ever been ashamed of Jesus or your faith before? Why do you think you felt this shame? How can we get to the point where we're no longer ashamed?

DIG INTO Scripture

Read and meditate on Sunday's Scripture to find deeper meaning and connection to God

Mark 8:34-38

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

LEAVE THE BUILDING

Take what you learned on Sunday and apply it to your life

  • Evaluate yourself and figure out what you're putting your worth in other than Jesus. Why do you turn to these things to give you an identity? How can you surrender them and take up Jesus's invitation to deny yourself to follow him?
  • The Gospel is not about improving self, the Gospel is about abandoning self. What does this statement mean to you? How can you make this truth part of your life this week?
  • What does the cost of following Jesus look like to you? Are you willing to pay the cost in order to be close to him? Weigh the cost this week.
