DEEPER Questions

Go through these questions in your LifeGroup or on your own to Dig Deeper into
Sunday's message

1. Have you ever found yourself in the "waiting room" of life? Maybe you were waiting for test results to come back, waiting to find a spouse, waiting for that job offer, waiting to get into college, or maybe you're still waiting. Talk about this time(s) with your group.

2. Throughout this whole Gospel of Mark, Jesus touches so many people who couldn't be touched in those days: the leper, tax collector, paraplegic, demon-possessed, and now the woman who was defiled because of her bleeding disease. What do you think this pattern of touching the un-touchable says about Jesus's character? Why do you think this was such a big deal that he touched these types of people?

3. The woman who was bleeding was healed when she touched the hem of Jesus's robe. Jesus could have easily moved on and not said anything because he was in such a big crowd, but he calls her out: "who touched me?" Jesus then talks to the woman who he has just healed. Why do you think Jesus makes this healing personal? How does this personal power relate to our own lives?

4. Rodney talked about how we preach Jesus all wrong. We beg people to pursue Jesus as if Jesus is getting the deal of a lifetime if they decide to pursue him, but really we're getting the deal of a lifetime when we choose to follow him! How has Jesus's pursuit of you changed your life? Do you know you've been pursued by him before you even decided to pursue him?

5. The second story in Mark chapter 5 is the story of Jesus raising the 12 year-old girl back to life. Jesus is calm even in the midst of this chaotic storm when everyone around him is in mourning because the girl has died. He is all-powerful and uses his power to bring her back to life. What can you take away from this story that still rings true in your own life? Do you think Jesus is surprised by the storms you're walking through right now? How can you rely on his power to see you through?

Mark 5:21-34, 38-42

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him.
And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus[a] saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement.

LEAVE THE BUILDING

Take what you learned on Sunday and apply it to your life

  • The woman who was healed of her bleeding condition went public with her healing. How has Jesus healed you? It doesn't need to be physical, either. If Jesus has done a work in your life, quit hiding and find a way to go public with that healing this week!
  • The recurring theme of both of these stories is surrendering to an all-powerful God who is calm in the midst of chaos. Have you surrendered to this Jesus? A calm Jesus with complete power?
  • Do you recognize the fact that Jesus isn't simply an element of our lives that will make them a little better, but the one thing that can change our whole life? How can you recognize that power this week?
