DEEPER Questions

Go through these questions in your LifeGroup or on your own to Dig Deeper into
Sunday's message

1. Rodney opened the message by talking about Jesus and John the Baptist as a package deal. What are some other examples of package deals you can think of? Discuss with your group how John and Jesus were so connected. Why do you think Herod's wife wanted John dead so bad?

2. Why do you think King Herod kept John alive for so long when he knew his wife hated him? Think back to times in your own life where people have spoken truth to you but you maybe weren't ready to hear it. Why do you think you (and Herod) kept going back to people like this?

3. Besides the fact that his cousin had just been killed, why do you think John's death grieved Jesus so much (we're told he goes off to a secluded place to be by himself)? Do you think Jesus was reminded of the upcoming pain of the cross in this moment?

4. One of the key lessons from the story is this: Sometimes you have to lose to win. How did John lose in the short-term to win in the long-term? Do you think he knew the end was coming for him? How do you think he faced the executioner that night when he came down to his prison cell?

5. Herod's path of destruction was paved all along the way with pride. Do you think there's truth to the statement that behind every sin is pride? Why or why not? How have you seen this play out in your own life?

6. It's true that sometimes the quietest people are the scariest. Why do you think we should be careful when Jesus is quiet, both here in the story and in our own lives? Do you think it's better to have God be silent or feel the weight of your sin loud and clear? Why?

Mark 6:14-29

The Death of John the Baptist

14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus'[a] name had become known. Some[b] said, “John the Baptist[c] has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” 17 For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.
21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias's daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John's[d] head. He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

LEAVE THE BUILDING

Take what you learned on Sunday and apply it to your life

  • John's lesson for us in this story was that sometimes we have to lose to win. Reflect on times in your own life where you've had to temporarily lose something to serve God permanently. How have those losses shaped you and your relationship with God?
  • Where do you see pride at play in your life? Are there areas you can give control over to God?
  • Listen to God this week. Is he being silent in your life? If so, how can you make an effort to hear him more clearly? Do you feel the concrete weight of your sin and his voice in your life? How can you grab on to grace in the midst of that weight?
